We are all aware that children learn by interacting and watching others.  This could be with parents, siblings grand parents and of course other children.  Early childhood experiences shape children’s brain development and motor efficiency and can have lasting effects on mental health and well-being.   This means that relationships are essential for children’s learning and development.

The team at MFA have spent the last 25 years working with children from the age of 3 years to build confidence, coordination, strength and balance through martial arts training and have realised the importance to help children develop these skills at an earlier age.

The “Tiny Tots” program is all about providing young children with an environment that stimulates their growth in both Neuro (Brain) and  Motor Skill (Muscle)  development.  Children need to learn how to co-ordinate the use of arms and legs when walking, climbing and riding a bike, they also need to understand the direction of movement to improve sensory reactions and of course build muscle memory and recall.  All of this needs to be conducted in a fun, friendly and safe      environment for both children and their parents.

Children develop at stages summarised below:

18 Months

  • Starts to walk with short movements, stopping and starting on won

  • Can run a little but has trouble avoiding obstacles

  • Begins climbing and exploration

  • Starts to push and pull things

2 Years

  • Has the ability to run safely, starting and stopping and avoiding obstacles

  • Has the strength and balance to complete squats

  • Can start navigating stairs with weight balance and distribution

  • Is learning to hold bigger objects such as balls and is trying to use the feet to move objects

  • Is learning how to jump from an elevated platform with two feet

3 Years

  • Is walking up and down stairs independently

  • Is climbing on frames and other objects safely

  • Is starting to carry objects around that are larger and is able to catch a ball

  • Is becoming more aware of balance and is able to stand on one leg or on tip toes

  • Is able to clap and sing along with others

Our program works on these and many other areas of child development in a structured game play environment.  Our class leader will facilitate a development session with  parent and child using objects and music in a safe and friendly atmosphere.
