Taekwondo was officially included in the full Olympic program of events at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games after twice appearing as a demonstration sport (Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992). Sports Taekwondo took off and was another way for aspiring athletes to test their skills on the largest of testing grounds the Olympic Games.
Since then sport Taekwondo has flourished and the FCS program offered at The Taekwondo Academy is one of the best sports development programs in the country. Our athletes have become State, National and International champions. Our programs have also produced elite level athletes that have represneted Australia at the World Championships and the Junior Youth Olympics (14-17 years).
Sports Taekwondo has 2 components, firstly full contact sparring (Olympic Recognised) and Poomsae (Patterns Included in the World Championships). Sport Taekwondo is a dynamic and challenging side to martial arts training requiring athletes to become the masters of the technical skills of Taekwondo.
Previous martial arts skills will help in the sparring aspect of the sports Taekwondo program whereas a background in dancing/gymnastics will assist in the Poomsae. Sport Taekwondo members do not have to participate in traditional Taekwondo training and will be graded on their skill sets for the program they are part of.
